Fun Winter Writing Prompts: Winter Writing Story Starters By Robin Sellers

Bring the fun of winter into the classroom with these fun and creative winter writing prompts. It's the time of the year when students can write about polar bears, penguins, snow, snowballs, sledding, ice skating and more. These winter story starters encourage students to be creative and come up with creative stories with their winter story starters. Plus, they are perfect for your winter writing centers.

A story starter is a great tool to get students writing using creative ideas. A story starter provides a prompt that creates a scenario that, well, starts the story. Then students have a free license to finish the story any way they wish. Plus, they help you meet your Common Core narrative writing goals.

I took my story starters, added great graphics, put them on pencils, and added them to a canister that I got from the dollar store. I also found the cute snowman holder at Dollar General. They can choose their own story starter and even use their new winter pencil and write away through the holiday season.

Christmas Writing Prompts: Christmas Story Starters By Robin Sellers

I love Christmas writing prompts, don't you? It's the most wonderful time of the year to add a bit of creative writing to the curriculum at Christmas. It's this time of the year when students can write about Santa, reindeer, presents, Christmas trees, elves, and gingerbread men. In fact, they get encouraged to be creative and come up with creative stories with Christmas story starters.

I got a bit crafty with my story starters this year and decided that they would also make perfect pencil toppers or candy cane toppers or even ornaments if you have a tree in your classroom.

I took my story starters, added great graphics, put them on pencils, and added them to a canister that I got from the dollar store. Then I added a string of white lights. It's like my own Christmas light display for students. They can choose their own story starter and even use their new Christmas pencil and write away through the holiday season.

Thanksgiving Writing Prompts

How will you celebrate Thanksgiving in the classroom this year? How about using some fun Thanksgiving writing prompts instead of those old boring ones that we've been using forever.

For the older children, I've created this fun Thanksgiving writing prompt set. It can also be used as a classroom decoration too and they even make great cupcake toppers. These Thanksgiving story starters are not your typical Thanksgiving writing prompts. They are fun and original. Here's one of my favorite Thanksgiving writing prompts for kids:

You just saw a turkey wearing a pilgrim hat running from the police.

Thanksgiving writing prompts
I promise, your kids will have a lot more fun with this prompt than the typical "what will you do for Thanksgiving" prompt. These prompts will help you meet Common Core writing standards for writing imaginative narratives.  W.2.3, W.3.3, W.4.3, W.5.3

Thanksgiving story starters
The set includes 24 Thanksgiving and Harvest Day themed story starters in color, six themed images for classroom decoration, three pages of graphic organizers, and eleven themed writing pages. Add in the two pages of instructional material and writing tips for teachers, and you're ready to go. You can start using these the first day of November and use a prompt each day or use them during the week of Thanksgiving. They will work well during the Thanksgiving short week of school. These are perfect for classrooms and for homeschool writing.

These materials are just right for 2nd through 5th grade students and are perfect for narrative paragraphs, event paragraphs, narrative essays, and event essays. Plus, you'll get your students excited to use their creative writing skills.

Halloween Teaching Activities: Lots of Fun Halloween Activities for Kids

Boo! It's that time of year when we can get by calling our kiddos little goblins. Welcome to the Halloween season. I don't know about you, but for me Halloween is a season that lasts for the entire month of October. I think it adds a little bit of magic and fun into the classroom. I wanted to share with you some of my latest Halloween teaching resources that are sure to be a Halloween hit in the classroom and homeschool classroom.

First up is my Halloween fraction game. I wanted to create a fun way to learn about comparing fractions (and meet Common Core standards) so this fraction game board was the answer. This fraction board game has all you need to let your students learn about fractions and have fun.

fraction games

First, get your students to create their candy bag fraction books. These books represent fractions and the students cut around the lines for each fraction. I added a candy bag to the book to tie into the theme for the game. For each of the fraction task cards, the children must decide which candy bag has the most candy. They can use their fraction book as a manipulative to help them with an answer.

fraction book
This game includes 90 fraction game cards, costumed kids game pawns, directions, the fraction book, and an answer sheet. This works well as a Halloween math center .

Of course you always need to add in a bit of science during Halloween. What about a craft too? I'm so excited about my life cycle of a pumpkin craftivity. It lets students learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin while they create a pumpkin craft. This craft is super any time of they year that you're studying plants.

Let's add in a bit of Halloween writing. These Halloween writing prompts are also a Halloween classroom decoration and they meet the Common Core writing a narrative standard. Each of the 40 prompts create a scenario where the students will write an imaginative narrative. Plus, use them as pencil toppers and you've got a nice little inexpensive Halloween present for your students. Yeah!
Halloween writing prompts

I also love my Clip It games. They are so great for recognizing numbers and counting. Plus they are super for fine motor skills. With my Halloween games, students use clothespins and clip the correct answer on each card. Just cut the cards apart and follow the rules for the game in the set. I have two Halloween themed sets.

Halloween game for the classroom
If you know anything about the Common Core standards and math, you know about ten frames. I thought I'd make learning about ten frames a little more fun and I added Jack-o-lanterns to the frame. These are my Halloween ten frames. Fun!

Back to School Writing Prompts by Robin Sellers

I love writing prompts, don't you? The beginning of the year is a great time to add a bit of creative writing to the curriculum. It's this time of the year when students can learn to love writing. You can encourage them to be creative and let come up with creative stories. My back to school writing prompts encourage creative narratives and add a little excitement to the back to school routine. Don't ask your students what they did over their summer vacation. Ask them what they did on another planet over the summer and get ready for some creative ideas.

100 Sweet and Simple Classroom Dollar Store Solutions

When you're spending your own cash to teach students, you learn how to be resourceful. Many teachers have learned the power of the dollar for their classrooms. From the dollar bins at the front of Target (I always have to check out their school items.) to the Dollar Stores, teachers have walked through the doors of those stores and come out with their next teaching solution for just a dollar.

dollar store teaching ideas linky

My challenge for you is to share your best dollar store classroom creation or find. Let us know how you plan to use it in the classroom. Please share any other tips too.

Then add your link to the bottom of this post and be sure to link back to this post too. I've got room for 100 Sweet and Simple Dollar Store education creations below. (Be sure that you are Pinterest friendly. We'll want to pin these ideas and even feature some favorites here.)

Here's mine: Rainbow Craft Stick Tally Marks

ideas for craft sticks
I picked up this pack of rainbow craft sticks. These work really well for a hands-on tally exercise. Give children five of each color and show them how to make tally marks.
counting by 5s

craft stick tally marks

Since they will only have five of each color, it will be easy to create like sets. This is a natural way to then work with counting by fives. Then, of course, the kiddos can work with ordering the colors of a rainbow.

And that's a sweet and simple way to use a dollar store find to help teach the kiddos.
